Site Redesign Notes

Most of you have probably noticed (but have failed to comment) on my new look. I changed my header to a darker, but more artsy look. I also changed the color scheme from green/greenish-yellow to brown/brownish-yellow.

What do you think? Be honest!

Other changes i’ve made:

  • Blogroll cleanup: For the longest time, I tried to keep track of dozens of blogs, but this turned out to be too time-consuming. It also turned out that reading dozens of blogs on a daily basis means I couldn’t really keep track of what was going on in any of them. So now, I have basically two categories:
    • Favorites: 8-10 blogs that I read daily. If you are not on this list, please don’t be offended. I had to choose among dozens of blogs that I liked alot. This doesn’t mean that I won’t read other blogs, I just don’t have time to read them daily.
    • Who Links Here: Self-explanatory. This is essentially a list of recipracol links. If you link to me, and you aren’t on the list, please let me know.
  • Bookmark Button: Click here if you want to add my page to any social bookmarking service (e.g., de.licio.us, etc)
  • Subscribe Button: Click here if you want to subscribe to my feed using your prefered feed reader (e.g., bloglilnes, newsgator, etc.).
  • Removed Items: I did away with the “Ask a Chemist” feature, and the “LIVE CHAT” feature. The Ask a Chemist thing was getting way too heavy, and the LIVE CHAT nobody was using. You can still ask me a chemistry question using the “contact me” button, but please remember, I only have a BA in Chemistry and I really can’t help you in your cutting edge research efforts.

    Looks good TJ!

When did you launch the new look? I read your blog via RSS and wasn’t aware of the change until you mentioned it.

Now that I’m here, I do like the simplified Blogroll. It’s much more focused Besides, you can always add a page of NH bloggers down the road if you choose.

Where did you find the image of the “lightning guy?”

Looks fine although I’m not a big fan of busy backgrounds but then again it doesn’t really get in the way.

I mostly read through bloglines, so I didn’t notice the changes right away.

first, I have to get this out of my system: w00t! I’m a favorite!

OK, now that THAT’S out of the way, I like the new header, thought it seems less chemistry-related than your previous one. Is that some kind of human-robot hybrid? BORG???? ghetto borg, maybe. I like the cleaner look of the top, though.

JM: I’m kicking myself. . . I can’t find the name of the artist who did the original picture — I’ll try to find him, but he’s some photo-artsy guy I found on Stumbleupon.

Robin: thanks. I don’t know what else to use as a background, unless I go with a boring old color.

ESC: You are a favorite, what can I say (so you best be nice to me or else. . .)?

It’s fun to change the look of your blog now and then. However, it is a bit disheartening to find that so many readers don’t even see the design. So many folks use feed-reader programs and don’t even see the ‘real thing’. They miss the photos, artwork and all the personal touches we put into our blog designs. Personally I like to visit each blog, kinda like visiting friends. That’s why I bookmark blogs instead of using a reader. Ah well, to each his own.

I’ll get down off my soapbox now.

Lisa: I understand what you are saying and I agree. For a while I tried to follow every blog I liked, so I used bloglines to track them. I ended up skimming 50 blogs a day, and not really reading any of them. Plus, I missed the look and “feel” of some of my favorite sites.

    Whoaaaa nelly! lol

I usually read your blog via bloglines so I don’t always get to see the background and colors. It definitely was worth a visit. :D
